MUMMY, I’M HUNGRY!
I recently had a
conversation with a mum who was feeling a little stressed with her little one. She
had noted that her son had started to wake and be so ravenously hungry, he did
not want to wait for her to prepare breakfast, but instead wanted to have a
bowl of cereal and then the family breakfast afterwards.
Why
is that a Problem?
Well after having
two breakfasts, mum had noticed her son was barely hungry when it came to lunch
time. This is not a good thing if you have prepared a nutrient rich lunch. To
cut a long story short, her son was then starving in between meals and had
begun to enter an unhealthy cycle which was also interfering with sleep
patterns. Both parents and their son were understandably grumpy!
Breaking
the Pattern
I advised mum that
instead of giving her son that first
bowl of cereal, offer
him fruit instead. If fruit is declined then he can’t be that hungry. The sugar in fruit is natural so more balanced. With cereals
however, they are full of refined carbs that will fill him up in this case so much
so that it knocks his whole routine out.
The first few
days of this new ritual were a challenge as always when making a change. Both
parents stuck with it however, which resulted in one more happy family.
It’s all
about encouraging our children to make healthy lifestyle choices so that they
can be the best version of themselves: Sometimes this can be really hard, but
perseverance really pays off.
